Obiectives:

Questions that require a solution:

- Paleobiodiversity. The fossil inventory is incomplete, at least for certain intervals (e.g., Bajocian, Kimmeridgian-Berriasian, Barremian-Aptian);

- Identifying the paleoecological context for the evolution of the faunal and floral associations. - Locating levels that record significant geological events (e.g., the Middle Jurassic hardground; the Tithonian-Berriasian boundary within the white limestones succession and the Jurassic-(?Berriasian)

– Cretaceous hardground discontinuity in Dâmbovicioara Couloir; - Deciphering the sequence evolution for the whole succession;

- Revising the paleogeographical and paleotectonic framework based on the original new data.

In order to find the answers for these still pending issues, we propose a detailed study of the region via the investigation of several profiles (sections) covering the whole area under study, as follows:

1) On the western flank of the Piatra Craiului syncline, from north to south: (a) Padina Sindileriei; (b) Padina Inchis?-Brâna caprelor; (c) Brâul Ciorânga-Vârful Ascu?it; (d) Padina lui C?line?; (e) Valea Vl?du?ca; (f) Bârsa T?ma?ului-Zaplaz-"Lan?uri"; (g) Padina L?ncii-Poiana Inchis?; (h) ?aua Funduri; (i) Dealul Pietricica.

2) On the eastern flank of Piatra Craiului syncline, from north to south: (j) Pr?p?stiile Z?rne?tilor; (k) Valea Coac?zei; (l) Cheile Dâmbovicioarei.

3) In Dâmbovicioara Couloir, from north to south: (m) Fundata-west; (n) Fundata east-Sarametu; (o) Valea Muierii; (p) Valea Crovului; (r) Dealul Sasului; (s) Valea Râu?orului-Gruiul Lupului. Besides, the Albian conglomerates in the Piatra Craiului syncline filling and the calcareous klippe north from Piatra Mic? embedded in the Vraconian-Cenomanian conglomerates will be studied in several locations.

In order to achieve the proposed scientific objectives mentioned before (i.e., to answer the currently unresolved issues in the region), the profiles will be investigated from multiple perspectives: paleobiodiversity, paleoecological relationships, biostratigraphic markers, sedimentological features and their distribution, significant events in the identification of depositional sequences and their distribution, tectonic relationships. The study will involve a modern approach on sedimentary deposits that are currently incompletely documented; thus, it could provide an example and a reference for further investigation of other Carpathian or European areas. We assume that this work will result in a series of new results on the paleontological inventory and paleobiodiversity (including the possible identification of new taxa), accurate dating (biostratigraphy) of the studied deposits, recording geological events with regional and global significance, reconstruction of the configuration of sedimentary bodies and of the sequence stratigraphy – all allowing regional and global correlations.

 

 

The region corresponding to the Piatra Craiului Massif and Dâmbovicioara Couloir (Southern Carpathians) provides a unique opportunity for a multidisciplinary approach on a stratigraphic succession covering over 75 m.y. The sediments cropping out here consist of terrigenous, terrigenous-carbonatic and mainly carbonate rocks assigned to the Bajocian–Cenomanian interval. Previous studies have defined the general geological background and brought data on the paleontological content and the corresponding fossils’ biostratigraphic significance. The current project proposes a complex investigation of this area based on integrating paleontological, biostratigraphical, paleoecological, sedimentological-petrographical and sequence stratigraphy data. Thus, we intend to clarify currently unsolved geological issues in the region, related to: paleobiodiversity, paleoecological context, significant geological events (e.g., hardgrounds, condensed levels, emersion unconformities), sequence stratigraphy evolution, paleogeographical and paleotectonic context. We will study, sample and log 18 profiles covering the whole area and stratigraphical succession of interest. The research team consists of members with complementary fields of expertise, including senior researchers, postdoctoral- PhD- and graduate-master students. The proposed approach is internationally up-to-date; it will provide new knowledge of scientific impact and practical consequences.
